Google releases open source data cleanser

Google has updated and re-released open-source software for cleaning, analyzing, and transforming data sets, now called Google Refine.

The software, originally called Freebase Gridworks, came with Metaweb, a company Google purchased in July.

Google Refine is a collection of tools that could come in handy when wrangling useful information from a data set, particularly ones that have data inconsistencies.

IBM Offers New Cognos Express for Midsize Business Intelligence

IBM has launched its new IBM Cognos Express business intelligence (BI) solution, which IBM says is designed and priced specifically for midsize customers. It's designed to be deployed in a matter of hours, IBM says, though most customers will opt for some assistance from IBM or IBM's Business Partners to set it up.

So does it run on IBM i? As I've mentioned before, IBM seems to be downplaying operating systems and hardware across its lineup in favor of focusing on solutions, and Cognos Express is no different. It takes some digging to figure out what it supports, exactly, and ultimately an IBM PR query to get the answer: Cognos Express runs on a Windows-based server, but it'll happily connect to IBM DB2 for i-based data, along with most other common databases.

We test the performance of SQL Server 2008 on a set of complex data warehouse queries designed to highlight the effect of these two features and observed a significant performance gain over SQL Server 2005 (without these two features). On average, about 75 percent of the query execution time has been reduced. Add open-source BI (business intelligence) vendor Pentaho to the list of vendors rolling out financial incentives to lure customers during the global recession.

On Monday, the company will announce a new migration program along with the launch of its 3.5 release. Under the "Escape" offer, users of Actuate e.Reports, Brio, Cognos Impromptu, Crystal Reports and Oracle Reports can have their BI reports converted to Pentaho for special rates, starting at US$5,000 for 25 reports. For bigger volumes, the cost can go as low as $100 per report.

Meanwhile, Pentaho BI Suite Version 3.5 features a new designer that speeds up the process of building reports, along with "self-service" functionality that lets business users create content and run queries against data without the need for deep technical knowledge, according to the company.

The documents in question are maintained with the usual office automation software, such as word processors and spreadsheets. Traditionally, in order to perform data mining operations you extracted the data from the data warehouse or mart, into the mining tool where you processed it. The problem with this is that there is a significant performance hit from the extraction of all that data. Of course, you could reduce that impact by sampling the data, but then you lose accuracy. As a result, the trend recently has been to perform mining processes "in-database". And one of the first announcements we can expect after the acquisition is complete is that IBM will be implementing SPSS functionality in DB2.

Yesterday, BusinessWeek ran a post from a "guest blogger" with the headline “The Failure of Commercial Open Source Software.” The headline’s clearly designed to get the open source blogosphere up in arms, but has so much bad information that both McGraw and Hill must be doing somersaults rather than just rolling over. And the problem with such misinformation at mainstream media outlets like BusinessWeek is that, unfortunately, business executives read them.
